In late 2018, after years imagining the perfect Yardley-based business, Liz Young began researching indie bookstores, believing a bookshop would be the perfect addition to our quaint town. By early 2019, she had watched every video on the topic and attended a “Bookstore Boot Camp” in Florida with other aspiring booksellers.
She was committed to a downtown location that would be warm and inviting. Her vision included comfy seating for shoppers, a place children could enjoy story hour, an area for book clubs to convene, and cozy nooks that kids could sink into while igniting their imaginations.
The foursquare home converted to retail space at 49 S. Main Street (across from the Wawa) was close to everything in town, and the perfect location. She settled on the name Commonplace Reader, a mule named Franki as a mascot, and a logo inspired by the way books would have been brought into town in years past (pulled along the canal on a mule barge).
There is nothing mundane about Commonplace Reader, or Liz. Her tagline, “Connect, Inspire & Explore” is the perfect description for how to interact in her store. Readers connect through book clubs, with authors at events, and with neighbors in the shop or on the wraparound porch. They are inspired by the rich selection, well-organized shelves, and the beautiful surroundings. They can also explore the “staff picks” wall, or browse the local art displayed throughout the store.
Liz is a savvy businessperson who has focused on building community within her shop, from book clubs to author events, to newsletter updates, her focus on connecting others truly stands out. Over the years, Commonplace Reader has become a favorite destination for book lovers, families, and anyone on the hunt for a unique or special gift. We are thrilled that she has joined our panel of experts to share ideas and insight, favorite books, and much more.
While ‘shop local’ is a mantra we hear often, Liz understands that embracing the movement begins with each business owner. “My carpenter, lawyer, accountant, landlord, print shop,” says Liz, “even the bakery that provided the pastries for my opening are all within a block of our front door.” Liz is also a passionate advocate for local businesses in her role with Experience Yardley, where she serves on the nonprofit Board as Treasurer.
Her creative spirit coupled with exceptional management skills have been impactful for projects including the Greetings from Yardley Mural and the upcoming Yardley Duck Walk project, among others.
The community has embraced Commonplace Reader, and that is part of what makes it a special place to visit. One reviewer on Google sums it up well. “This bookstore is fantastic.
